Do you still need antivirus on Windows 11?
Updated 2026-10-15
Every Windows 11 PC ships with Microsoft Defender Antivirus switched on. For many people that's a solid baseline, so the real question is whether you need anything more.
What the built-in protection does well
- Real-time scanning for known malware and ransomware
- SmartScreen warnings for dangerous downloads and websites
- A firewall and automatic security updates through Windows Update
What a paid suite typically adds
- Protection for more than one device type: Mac, Android and iPhone under one subscription
- A VPN for public Wi-Fi
- A password manager and dark-web or identity monitoring
- Parental controls and cloud backup
- Dedicated customer support
How to decide
If you only use one Windows PC carefully, Defender plus good habits may be enough. If you look after family devices, use public Wi-Fi often, or want identity monitoring and a VPN in one place, a suite such as Norton 360 Deluxe or McAfee Total Protection saves juggling several apps.
Whatever you choose, run only one real-time antivirus at a time. Installing a second one usually switches Defender's real-time scanning off automatically, which is expected.
